Round 5: Charlie Geraets' 62 and a Three-Way Logjam
Round 5, last night — back on Dutch 27: White/Blue, par 70. Warm evening, a full field of 23, and a finish so tight that three teams walked off tied for fourth.
๐ The Winners
๐ฅ Scott Bender + Landon Snider + Charlie Geraets + Michael Martin — −14
One name on the marquee: Charlie Geraets. 79 gross, net 62 off a 17 — the lowest net of the night and the lowest single number anyone's posted all season. The league's net assassin struck again. Michael Martin added a tidy 70 (two birdies, nine pars), and even Landon Snider — longtime Hall of Pain tenant — turned in an honest 73 net to land on the right side of a recap for once. Wire to wire.
๐ฅ Jared Hoppe + Tate Motschenbacher + Mark Pietig + David Anderson — −12
Jared Hoppe led off with a 71 net and three birdies, the low gross (76) on his team. Mark Pietig (72) and David Anderson (71) kept the machine that's carried them all year humming. Two back.
๐ฅ Peter Dahl + Luke Ostrowski + Nick Anderson + Jim Bender — −11
Peter Dahl off a 2 again (77 gross), Jim Bender's steady 75 net, and Luke Ostrowski's 70 net dragged this one onto the podium. Three off the lead.
๐ชข The Logjam at Fourth
Three teams finished knotted at −9, splitting the points: Neitzke / Asche / Clough / Johnson, Moser / Ferguson / Jackovich / Miller, and Heitkamp / Sourdiff / Thomes. Ryan Neitzke (76, three birdies) and Justin Heitkamp (74, eleven pars) turned in the best individual cards of the bunch and have nothing but a shared scrap of points to show for it. Welcome to team golf.
๐ฆ The Birdie Board
- Jared Hoppe — 3
- Ryan Neitzke — 3
- Michael Martin, Justin Heitkamp, Jason Sourdiff, Tate Motschenbacher, Phil Ferguson — 2
๐ฅ The Hall of Pain
Jerad Clough — 99 gross, eight doubles
Your webmaster, back in his natural habitat. Eight doubles, three triples+, and a 99 that the scorekeeper (also me) would dearly love to quietly misplace. The 105 from Round 2 finally has company. The handicap is the only thing on this card working overtime.
Dave Thomes — 94 gross
The Team Points co-leader picked a rough night for the gross column — six doubles and a triple — though his 76 net kept the team in the logjam. Even the guys at the top have weeks like this.
๐ The Grinder Award
Justin Heitkamp. Repeat winner, and the low gross of the night at 74 — eleven pars, zero doubles off a 3. The same surgical, boring, beautiful golf that takes this award home every time we hand it out. One of these Thursdays his team is going to catch up to him.
๐ค Heads Up
Round 6 is Thursday June 4 — Dutch Blue/Red. Team Points through five rounds:
- Charlie Geraets — 42
- Dave Thomes — 38
- Mark Pietig — 38
- Michael Martin — 34
- Ryan Neitzke — 33
Charlie's 62 vaults him back to the top of the board he basically lives on now. Five down, fifteen to go. Best eight weeks count — see you Thursday.
